What if we just said wait? The case for a grassroots review of the new Roman Missal

January 2010 Happy New Year!

It's now been a month since the "What If We Just Said Wait" initiative was launched in an article by Seattle pastor, Father Michael G. Ryan, in the December 14, 2009 issue of America. In this brief period of time, more than 9,000 people from all over the world have signed on! In doing so they have expressed their concern about the new translations of the Roman Missal and asked our bishops to consider a period of evaluation and "market testing" before the new translations are implemented throughout the English speaking world.

Please consider forwarding this email to friends and colleagues. If you are a lay person, please consider discussing this issue with your parish priest(s); if a priest, please consider sharing your concerns with your bishop. If you are a member of the Presbyteral Council, please consider raising the issue with that group. Urge them to explore and think about the impact of the controversial new translations on the prayer life of the people of God.

An extensive list of web resources is available at www.whatifwejustsaidwait.org. Now is the time for people to educate themselves on this subject. (Ignorance or defeatism should not be options!) Those who are still studying the issue can read about the history of the new translations and the devastating impact they had when they were implemented in Advent of 2008 in South Africa. Comparison texts are also available. Links are also provided to the extensive media coverage of this initiative.

The more signatures we are able to collect, the greater the impact the initiative will have when it is shared with the bishops. In the words of Bishop Donald Trautman, "Church of God, judge for yourselves. Speak up, speak up!"

May the Holy Spirit bless and guide our Church in the coming year!
